Identify the PAN you need

The Inland Revenue Department describes PAN as a permanent taxpayer identification number. Its FAQs distinguish a personal PAN from a business PAN and explain that business registration documents are relevant to a business application. Before using a portal form, decide whether you are applying as an individual or for a registered business. If you already have a PAN, check the department's guidance before submitting another application: the number is intended to identify the taxpayer over time.

Use the department's own portal

The department's published instructions point applicants from its website to the Taxpayer Portal and the registration area. The portal offers an application for registration and asks the applicant to choose the appropriate tax office. Open the portal from the department's current website rather than following an advertisement or an unverified agent's link. The screens may change, so follow the labels visible on the live government service.

Prepare the information before starting

Have your identity details and a working phone number or email available. For a business application, keep the business registration details and certificate at hand. Make sure the name and other details you type match the supporting documents. The department's FAQ describes a submission number during the online process; keep that number and any confirmation so you can follow up with the selected office.

Separate PAN from other registrations

A PAN application does not by itself answer whether a business must register for VAT or another tax. The department's FAQs discuss those registrations separately. If you are opening or changing a business, check the current rules for your activity and turnover with the Inland Revenue Department or a qualified adviser. Do not infer a VAT obligation or exemption from this introductory guide.

Check before you submit

Read the department's latest FAQ and portal instructions, especially if your identity, business type or tax office choice is unusual. If you are converting a personal PAN to business use, the FAQ explains a route involving the business registration certificate and the relevant tax office. Ask the office about the current process rather than creating a second record without checking.
